Foxton Mutual Improvement Society.
Last Tuesday night this Society held its meeting, and in the absence of the President, Mr G. Styles was voted to the chair. At the ordinary business two new members were elected. The discussion arranged for the night was a debate on Capital Punishment in which the affirmative was taken by Mr A. Saunders and the negative by Mr T« Westwood. These gentlemen made out a very good case on their sides and the arguments were supplemented by Messrs Craig, Carter and Morgan. Owing to the inclemency of the weather many ot the usual debaters were absent, and therefore the discussion was much shorter than usual. At the conclusion a vote was taken which showed that the meeting was unanimous for the retention of capital punishment. Arrangements were then made for the singing and elocution contests for next week, and several ladies and gen* tlemen handed in their names as con* I testants. The meeting was closed in the usual way.
