Bible-reading in Schools.
CIRCULAR TO MEMBERS OF
PARLIAMENT.
The Committee on Bible-reading in the Public Schools appointed by the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Otago and Southland desire to submit for your consideration the Berious defect in our Educational System arising from the exclusion of all Moral and Religious Instruction in the Publio Schools within school hours, and to request you to use your influence in Parliament to have a Plebiscite of the Electors throughout the Colony taken on the Question —
Are you in favour of legalising the use in the Public Schools (under the provision of a time table and conscience clause) of the Scripture Lesson Book of the Commissioners of National Education in Ireland ?
We would call your attention to the following facts :—
1. We are strong supporters of the National System of Education, and believe that it will be rendered more efficient and stable if such measure of Moral and Religious Instruction is permitted.
2. The " Scripture Lesson Book " is in no sense sectarian in its teaching, and has been used many year? in the national system of education in New South Wales.
3. It has received the approval of the Anglican, Presbyterian, and Methodist Churches throughout New Zealand.
