Chase after a Burglar.
THE NIGHTWATCHMAN SHOT-
i James MoAuliffe, lamplighter, employed at the Caversham gas works, when commencing his round close on midnight, saw a man apparently tampering with Todd Bros, store, Main road C&verabam. Knowing no one lived on the premies MoAuliffe watched the man for- a few moments, then hid in the doorway, from where he noticed a man com" oat and return into the side door of the store. Suspecting a burglary, McAuliffe ran for Constable Brennan. When they returned the man was not in sight. Brennan started to search the back streets. McAuliffe, with the water inspector, who was going his round searching for leaks, remained at an adjacent corner close to which the man recognised by MoAuliffe as one seen previously, suddenly emerged into the open. MoAuliffe shouted here he is., Whereupon die stranger stopped the attempted retreat. MoAuliffe ran after him, and gained rapidly, and was about to close when the map stopped and shot MoAuliffe in the right thigh, enabling him to escape. McAuliffe is not supposed to be dangerously wounded, though the bullet is still in his leg. Subsequent examination showed that the door was tampered with. No arrest has yet been made.
