CABLEGRAM FROM THE AGENT GENERAL. This morning His Worship the Mayor received the following telegram, which he has courteously handed to us for publication: — Wellington, 14th July, 1898. Cable from Agent-General. "Fair average New Zealand hemp twenty-six pounds ten shillings spot. Twenty-two pounds ten shillings c.i.f. September, November shipments. Price normal. Market inactive." Ritchie, Secretary, Agriculture. Hemp (New Zealand)— The market for Manila has been excited during tbe past four weeks, further diffi • { culties having arisen with regard to vessels loading at Manila, and prices have advanced fully £10 per ton, fair current closing at £37 103 per ton for ship declared. New Zealand has in consequence attracted more attention, and the value of good fair quality is £6 to £7 per ton higher than at the date of last report. On the spot about 200 tons old imports have been sold at £28 per ton, and for arrival the sales and resales amount to about SCO tons, near positions .at £25 rising to £26 10s o.f. and i., and distant at £24, with buyers at a further advance at the close.— (From Bank of New Zealand produce circular.)
