The American troops found the fortifications of Santiago very strong. While forcing the breastworks they pncounfcered barbed wire fencing 8 feet high. In carrying the worka they displayed splendid bravery. Daring a lull in the battle the infuvry sa»g the '• Star Spangled B toner," the wounded joining in.
