Not a keen-witted spieler, but a guileless young damsel of about seventeen summers is said to be guilty of the latest "confidence" trick. It is done like this. A young lady, of respectable appearance, calls at the house, and asks to see the 11 missus." There's a gentle shower falling at the time, and the frail young thing wants to know " if you would be so very kind, as to lend me a cloak for half-an hour or so. She has to go an urgent message to a distant part of the town, in her hurry she has forgotten her cloak, she would be so much obliged if — and so on, until the desired cloak is forthcoming. Then she flits, and the good wife buys herself another cloak.
