The Queen and Piper Find later.
During her tour of the wards, at Netley Hospital, the Queen conferred the Victoria Cross on Piper Findlater of the Gordon Highlanders and Pte. Vickery of the Dorset Regiment. The particular act for which Pte. Vickery received his decoration was his rescue of a wounded comrade at Dargai under a hot fire. The Queen asked him his name and regiment before pinning the Cross upon his breast; but her Majesty seemed acquainted with the particulars of Findlater's exploit at Dargar. Both men were seated in chairs when the Queen saw them. Findlater offered to rise, but the Queen refused to allow him, and herself left her chair to pin on the Crosses. As the Queen was leaving the surgical division, Findlater caught up the pipes, recently presented him by his admirers, and played the •'Haughs of Cromdale,"the tune he blew at Dargai. All the men were immensely gratified by the kindly interest her Majesty had displayed in their welfare.
