America and Spain. LANDING OF THE AMERICANS.
General Shafter landed his entire force near Santiago without mishap. He sent the coal transports to the westward, thus deceiving the Spaniards with reference to the direction of his intended landing.
When a landing was effeotf d at Daiquiri it was abandoned by the Spanish, The Texas silenced the
Toe-M 1 ?, battery, the other vessels clfeanng the shore of the opposing force.
As the Cubans attacked the enemy the Americans easily controlled their movements, and the country for many miles round was seizad within a few hours.
Admiral Gerveras reports the situation to be critical, and is now landing marines to assist in the defence of Santiago.
Admiral Sampaon sent four fast vessels to patrol the southern coast and stop blockade running. Reports from Palermo, a seaport of Sicily, state that Admiral Camara's fleet passed to the eastward.
A report has reached here thai the battle between the American forces and the Spaniards in the vicinity of Santiago is proceeding.
Most of the soldiers have been landed at Point Berraco. 12 miles from Santiago. The intervening country, which is strongly entrenched, is held dy large bodies of Spanish regulars.
