Rongotea.

(from oto own cobrespondent.) May 26. Two successful sooials have been held recently. The Primitive Metho • dist tea and social cleared £34 in cash and promises. This amount is to help to clear off the debt on the church. The welcome social given by the ladies of the Church of England to their minister and family was a splendid turn out, quite 100 persons being present, Mr Salisbury met with a very painful accident last Monday, a piece of 6 x 4 matai scantling fell off the roof of a house and struck him on the cheek and shoulder. His eyo and cheek were very badly cut and shoulder bruised. The improvements to Mr W. Davis' house are all but completed. Mr Darragh has just finished another addition to his store. Mr A. Broadbelt is making great improvements on hid new farm. Oar shoemaker wants to sell out to go to Elondyke as he thinks there is more money there than in Eon - gotea. Mr J. 0. Thompson will soon bo making improvements to his property here. Mr Hickford is running a daily mail to Palmers ton. The farmer wants two shillings a dozen for his eggs, and an advancad price on all his produce, but objects to pay the baker a little extra on his bread, though the baker has to pay £8 per ton extra on hi? flour. They assert that they will bake their own bread, so that the baker will have to move on. A very popular wedding is shortly to take place here. Mr Bauvolt has just returned from Sydney much better in health from his trip. Two of our local sports went down very heavy at. the Otaki races and say they will never go there again. Eongotea has caught the military mania. Some want a rifle corps, others want a mounted corps. A meeting is called for Monday night when the matter will be gone into, and a vote will be taken. Mr B. B. McKenzie is at the head of the matter. The Good Templar Lodge is grow, ing fat. New members are joining every week and the Lodge promises to be a very strong one. Our football club has collapsed. ' Some of the members have joined the Sandon dub,, others the Awahuri club. It is a great pity that a few should break up a club which had a bright future. Some sportsmen made some good bags of hares on the Queen's Birthday. Four of our young Bports travelled 100 miles last week to go pigeon shooting, were away four days, cost them something near £4 each, and they returned home witb 16 pigeons— -4 birds a man ! They could have had better sport closer at home for less money. Expensive pigeons. They won't go again.
