Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, MAY 24, 1898. Her Majesty the Queen.
To day we again are fortunate in being able to celebrate the birthday of the gracious Lady who rules over the British Empire, the subjects of whom we all feel a pride in being. All through the long life that has been vouchsafed to our Queen and Empress she has always shown a true and loving interest in her people and has used her immense influence towards forwarding the health and happiness of all. As the Queen was born on the 24th of May, 1819, she has long passed the allotted " three score years and ten " and thus each opportunity that her people have of celebrating this happy occassion is one that is treasured the more from the feeling that a time must soon come when her life will come to a close. •• God Save the Queen "is a shout used on all public festivals, and something like it ia in use in all countries, but never in the history of the world are these words used with such real and heartfelt feeling as thay are to day over the great British Empire. It would be a happy event if before the time arrives when Her Majesty puts off her earthly yoke, the great triumph of the union cf the A.nglo-Saxou race could be accomplished. The signs of the times points to its speedy result and as such a union would he powerful for peace it ig bound to be dear to the Queen who ia consideration of Her peoples well-being has ever been oppos-.d to war. When thai time comes, even though nnw a great mauy of our American cousins utter the prayer, there will he such ' a multitude spread over such an area of the world who would join with us, that opponents would think m re than twice about interfering wibh those who to-day and for the times our Soveraign rules over us, shout " God Save the Queen."
