Flax.
Messrs B. Gardner, Duncan, and Rutherford, the Commissioners appointed by the Government to re port upon the claims made for the flax bonuses', returned from the South yesterday. During their visit to the South Island they examined several improved appliances for dress ing the fibre, and it is understood that they were much impressed with some of them. The great rise in the price of New Zealand hemp at Home has induced many of the Southern millers to work night and day, and it is said that as a rulo the fibre turned out by them is very much better dressed than that which is produced in the "Wellington district. An order for a line of flax wai yesterday placed with a Wellington miller at £17 per ton—equivalent to about £22 at Home. The Flax Commissioners intend to leave for Auckland via Taranaki next week, and will return to Wellington by way of the East Coast. Quite a large number of mills are to be examined before their report, which we are assured will be of a most interesting character, can be presented to the Government.— Pott.
