Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, MAY 7, 1898.

We omitted to mention in our report of the cricket match last Wednesday that the local club entertained the visitors at lunch at the Manawatu Hotel. It has been finally arranged that Mr Bruce will be the Opposition candidate for this electorate at the next general election. The Messrs Strang Bros, have had their wheat threshed and find that over the whole area it has returned them thirty bushels to the acre. One part of a paddock was damaged by the flood and if the average had been taken over the area untouched by the flood the yield would have been between 50 and 60 bushels. It is probable that a return match will be played on the Queen's Birthday between the local cricketers and Mr McLennan's team, at the Oroua Downs. Two men the other night, bobbing for eels in the river, secured some 40 of these fish. Very few people understaud how these fish should be cooked, and therefore do not like them, but treated as the Maoris do, they are delicious. Mr John Kerr, formerly M.H.R. for Waimea, has been drowned on Lake Waimea. He had been on the lake two days laying nets for fish, and on Monday went out in a punt to attend to the nets, when evidently he stood up and overturned the punt, which struck him on the forehead. His body was found nine feet under water, 50 feet from shore. The New York Corporation ha 3 declined to recognise its predecessor's contracts. All the public works have been stopped, throwing 40,000 men out of employment. We understand it is the intention of the new Dramatic Club just formed to put in rehearsal a good piece as soon as possible. During the last few days several large cargoes of coal have been despatched from Newcastle to San Francisco,. It is stated that they are for the use of "the American Navy. Mr C. Wragge predicts stormy weather on the south-west coast of New Zealand under the influence of the disturbance " Asat." He has issued a special warning to shipping that heavy weather is certain over the Tasman Sea, especially on the western portion. A sitting of the Native Appellate Court will be held at Levin on the 12th inst, before Judges Ward and Mairin connection with appeals respecting Horowhenua No. 9 block. The Berlin nawspapers etate that if England obtains the Philippine Islands Germany will claim Samoa. The Standard says, a holder of flax at. Oroua Bridge was this week offered £17 per ton for his fibre. Consequent upon the rising market several mills will commence operations at Oroua Bridge shortly. During the last 10 days flour has risen in Brisbane 30s per ton. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last night to confirm the Special Order to adopt the Local Bodies Loans Act. The Mayor and Or Coley were the two councillors who were absent. Mr W. Nathan, Government Road Inspector at East Road, has in his possession what is evidently a fossil of some strange animal. The fossil is a mass of papa about two feet long and eight inches thick, and bears a striking resemblance to a pig as regards the nose, an elephant in the front of the head, but the most curious thing is the holes and bones of what at one time were horns are very conspicuous. Bones are quite distinct in the mass. It fell out of one of tqe cuttings on the East Road and was picked up by the workmen. Mr Nathan has written to Dr Hector regarding the strange find, and intends forwarding it to him. The whole weighs about 301bs. — Hawera Star. As still further corroboration of our assertion that the ranger of the Acclimatisation Society acted in a most unpardonable manner when he tried to stop the fishermen at the Heads from earning their living, we cull the following from last Wednesday's Standard : — As a striking proof of the rapid increase of fish in the | rivers of the Manawatu district, a prominent disciple of Isaac Walton informed I us yesterday that during the years of 1892, 93, and 94, he was unable to catch a single trout, although he fished consistently all through those seasons. In the season of 1895 four fish were caught by him, three of which were supposed to be salmon trout. The following year, 1896, he managed to land eight. Up to this time he was the only fisherman in the district, but the following year nine others joined him, and notwithstanding this increased competition he succeeded in catching forty-five during 1897. The season just concluded has, however, been the most successful of them all, for although there have been fully 30 rods going the gentleman referred to caught no less than sixty-five trout, and he estimates that fully fifteen hundred must have been caught altogether. This is certainly very satisfactory proof of the increase of the fish placed in our rivers by the Acclimatisation Society. We learn that at the examination of the Moutoa school on Thursday the pass equalled 91 per cent. McKee and Gamble, Photo-Engravers, and Lithographers, Wellington. Send for quotation.
