Speech by Lord Salisbury.
" A DIPLOMATIC CRACKER."
At the Primrose League demonstration, held at the Albert Hall, Lord Salisbury was given an ovation, and in the course of a speech he said the integrity of the Empire was much safer than in 1884. The breakers had been shattered, and he was confident that the House of Lords would remain unaltered. Weihaiwei would be of enormousadvantage to Britain. It was easily defended, while Fort Arthur would have been useless to Britain. L was a great mistake for Kussia to take Port Arthur, and its possession had not added to her influence at Pekin. Despite the jargon as to her isolation, Britain was amply com petent to hold her own. Her in fiuence in China had been enhanced. Virile nations were everywhere ab sorbing decadent nations. Although the seeds of conflict were apparent in many directions, Britain faced the future without disquietude. She would not allow herself to be taken at a disadvantage.
The Hou3e of Commons contained splendid material. The fiscal position of the country was unequalled in the world's history. The Chinese question was a diplomatic cracker with many detonations.
