THE OFFICE SET FIRE TO

Very early on morning tha office attached? to the residence of tha Manager of the Motoa Estate was broken into and money to the value of £5 abstracted.

It appears that the dogs were barking a good deal in the evening, but as the son was expected home by train from Palmerston it was thought it arose from their hearing him coming home. The train was very late however, and he did not get to the house until close on ten o'clock, bub the dogs were then about and announced his approach. After that, it is worthy of remark, the dogs were nob again heard. About three o'clock in the morning some sound disturbed Mrs Langdon and she asked her husband to have a look round. Mr Langdon went round the back of the house and found all quiet, and then to the front where everything appeared as usual. Standing for a minute on the verandah he caught sight of the office window, the office encloses part of one end of the verandah, being open, and he smelt something like smoke. He immediately called out for the key of the door and on opening it found papers and books on one of the shelves on fire.

1 With the assistance of his son Bishop, and Mr Lawson, Mr Langdon got the fire put out after burning his fingers a bit, and then had time to look round.
