The Manawatu Bowing Club and the late Athletic Club a short ime ago voted a sum of money for the purchase of a suitable present for Mr Frederick Eure who for some period occupied a position of responsibility in thesa clubs. While in Wellington Mr Stansell selected a gentleman's travelling bag and a silver fla-k, both having a suitable insorip toa engraved un tbtni, and we understand these will be sent to Mr Eure under a suitable covering letter. " The lady-help has been the ' black leg ' of the domestic s rvant." — Mrs Scott at the Women's Convention. An Irish soldier on sentry duty had orders to alow no one to smoke near his post. An officer wi'h a lighted cigar approached, and Pat body challenged him and ordered him to put it out at once. The officer, with a gesture of disgust, threw it away, but no sooner was his back turned than Pat : icked it up and quietly retired to his sentry-box. The offic-r just happened to look round, and observed a beautiful c'oud of smoke issuing from the box. He turned back, and at once ohaVnged Pat for smoking on du'y. A splendid flow of artesian water has just been obtained on Mr Gillespie's property in Kairanga, says the Manawatu Times. The water was reached at a depth of 150 feet, tbe flow being abund mt and the water of remarkable purity. By screwing on a cros9 pipe on the head of the artesian, and affixing a tap at both ends, a magnificent water supply is provided in three paddocks, which in the summer will be simply invaluable.
