Cellulose on Battleships.
Some experiments have been carried out by the Gunnery Establish, ment at Portsmouth, with the view of testing the powers of oorn pith cellulose in stopping leaks. It is an American invention, and is said to possess great advantages over cork when used for packing coffer-dams at the water-line in the unarmoured end 3of ships of war. A coffer-dam had been erected in the Nettle Bffc thick, and it was tightly packed with cellulose blocks. In front and at the rear of the coffer-dam were steel plates so as to represent the Bide of the ship. From a Sin gun a 501 b shell was fired into the structure! The shell burst inside the coffer-dam blowing out a part of the rear plate and some of the cellulose. After this the wafer test was applied, water being made to flow into the shot hole in front. In about twenty minutes it had soaked through the packing, and was pouring out through the rest in the back plate. So fai* as shell fire waß concerned, therefore the result of the trial wa3 not altogether favourable to the new inven* tion.
