Flax.
Mr A. Bergin, the New Zealand flax expert, has now produced oakum and ppun-yarn from the phormium by another process different from the processes used in producing the rope-flax and the weaving-flax. A^ patent for the oakum process is being taken nut by Mr Bergin. Russia has hitherto practically held a monopoly of the oakum industry, and the price has been for many years, owing to want of opposition, invariably very high. Shipwrights here state that the oakum produced by Mr Bergin is finer, stronger, and softer than that cf Russia. Mr Bergan considers that we can manufacture here much more cheaply than in Russia, and looks forward to the establishment of an important industry.— Pont.
