Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, APRIL 16. 1898.
Laudatory reviews have been published on Mr W. P. Beeves' new book, entitled "The Story of New Zealand," published in the Empire aeries. The Manawatu Times says :— We learn that among the certain candidates at next general election will be Ml' Oswald Gardner son of Mr R. Gardner, of Paiaka. Mr Gardner, jun., resides on the border of twb electorates, viz , Manawatu and Otaki, and has not yet decided for which he will stand but we understand he has definitely decided to contest one of those mentioned. The New trial of M. Zola is to be confined to his imputation that the courtmartial acquitted Major Esterhazy by order. An article is published by the Cologne Gazette strongly censuring President Kroger in connection with his administration of Tranßvaal affairs The newspaper advises Herr Kruger not to irritate Britain, his protectorate Power. A learned judge went on circuit lately (says a Melbourne paper) and took his daughter with him. All judges travel first nowadays, and have their carriage windows marked "Engaged." On arriving at the station of a well known holiday resort, there was a considerable crowd gathered on the platform, principally of young ladies who had come down from the fashionable hotel. The carriage marked " Engaged." was hurriedly rushed, and as the inmates alighted they were showered with rice while his Honour's hat was knocked off with an old boot. Such mistakes will occur but this one was most regrettable. It happened that a honeymoon couple, both well known in society, had left Melbourne by the same train that evening, but they had taken the precaution, knowing what was coming, of getting out at the previous station. Mr Archie Osborne has just imported a very fine assortment of both English and Colonial tweeds and he would be pleased if his customers could make convenient to call and inspect the same. A dangerous gift. Russia has supplied Montenegro with 30,000 repeating rifles and 25,000,000 cartridges. Shah Mohamed. leader of the gang who murdered Mr Graves, an offical of the •*e- man telegraph service, has been ca - tared. A prospector unearthed a 720z nugget in th<; (.'aßtlnmaine district. The Au trian troop* and fleet have been Withdrawn from Crete. Ihe conf rence between the owners of the col ieries in South Wales and the miners has prov-d abortive, owing to the owners requiring the miners' delegates to be allowed to exercise plenary powers. At the Otaki S.M. Court on Thursday William Wall sued Dennis Quill an hotel kerper for £118 odd for taking from plaintiff cheques while he was under the influ ence of drink. The same contradictory story was told, plantiff and four witnesses swearing one way and defendant and six witnesses swearing another way. At the conclusion of the cage Mr Greenfield said that he believed the defendant had been supplied with drink, and had paid over cheques while under the influence of drink but the evidence for the plaintiff had failed to identify any particu'ar cheque so paid. He must therefore nonsuit the plaintiff. He.remarked that the conduct of Mr Quill had been most reprehensible, and refused to allow him costs.
