Manawatu County Council.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held on Wed-

nesday. Present— Crs W. Taylor (chairman), T. Masters, A. Strang, T. P. Clark, H. Hammond, J. R. McLennan and J. G. Wilson. •* The inward correspondence was' dealt with as follows : —

From C. J. Nelson, asking for | return of deposit on Elkin's road.— S It wag against the rule to return deposit on an unfinished contract, but a progress payment was made. From several County Councils, in reference lo the proposed amendment of the Government Loaus to Loea%. Bodies Act to enable interest to be paid out of separate riding rates. Few of the Councils had had any experience of the matter and, as the Audit Department had not insisted upon its objection in regard to the charge of interest on the separate riding rates, it was decided to allow b> nropo<»ftl fc« drop. From the Manager of New Zealand itauwHya, Wanganui, agreeing o make an inspection of the locomotive Fox. From C. Hopping, Rongotea, spplying for a slaughtering license on section 257, Featherston street. A. Koberstein asked that his slaughtering license be transferred to C. Hopping.— Both applications were granted. Ft'om F. L. Behrenfc, giving reasons why he had not commenced his contract on the Main drain road. To be notified that unless he corn* mences his contract within two days from the date of the notice it will be canoelled. From the District Manager of New Zealand Railways, stating that unforseen circumstances prevented trucks being lent for metalling aa early as had been promised. From the Hospital Board, requesting payment of .£2OB 12s 6d, levy due from the county, and enclosing cheque for £15 6d, amount distributed by Council in charitable aid during the year. From Mrs E. Dew, Pungarehu, objecting to the payment of 10 per cent on overdue rates. -Objection not entertained. From R McMillan, Oroua Bridge, stating that he had not signed any Hst in favour of metalling the road between Messrs Sanaon's and Couper's properties or given any person authority to place it on the list. From the Sluggish Drainage Board, consenting to the removal of spoil thrown out from the main drain. From Government Engineer, returning voucher. for JGI2& 8* lOd duly CrriifiM, Binoun't of Government subsidy for construction of Scott's Ferry. From W. Flyger, in reference to the Beach road, FoxtoD. stating that he had tvc?ived notice from the Chief Surveyor statiug that the land thft road is to go through is not iind.r (.he Land Transfer Act, andadvising thah application be at once made to bring it under.— Tenders were ciili.'d for the completion of the road for consideration at the March m elin<? and they had to be deferred until thief meeting, now it will be necessary to bring the land under the Lwd Transfer Act before the work n he undertaken. Fi-om Paul Greenwald, Taikorea, i\ questing that his name be placed on tb.i rate roll for section 67, block 11, Ta Kawa.— Deferred pending more information. Mr Harris attended the Council and requested that 'a drain on Speedy 'a Line be cleaned out. He said it drained about 30 chains of road. Cr Hammond said Mr McHard;e bad promised to keep the drain clear, and in purchasing the property tbe late' Mr Harris had incurred tbe liabilities with it. Cr Wilson said probably any aotion . the Council might take in this ease might govern others. The chairman said the Council., had no responsibility in the matter. Cr Masters saij the Council had already made an . offer to pay one -' third of the oost of cleaning out the * drain, but the offer had not been accepted. Crs Strang and Clark said similar . applications had been made to them to clean out drains which drained private land. Mr Hards was asked whether he would accept the offer made to his late father. He replied that it would require consideration. It was resolved. That the Council cannot contribute < -towards the cost of cleaning out the drain. That the Manawatu Council agree to a warrant to be issued for the construction of a bridge at Wirokino, the cost to ba apportioned as per Foxton Borough Council's letter of sth October last, namely, that one third share be paid by the Foxton Borough Council, the Horowhenua County Council, and Manawattt, County Council provided that a subsidy of £ for £ be granted by the Government, and also that the total * co3fc of the bridge does not exceed the estimate given, which was £5,860. On the suggestion of Or Wilson it was decided to recommend that the structure be made strong enough to carry a railway. That tenders be called, to be in by . next meeting, for making drain and l;; forming road in. Moutoa swamp as per schedule 31 of loSn of 46000.

That the tender of Stewart, Andrews and Nelson for delitery of metal on the Shannon Fox ton road be accepted, 6a 3d per yard. That £10 be put on the pay sheet for payment to the Small Birds' Nuisance Club.

That tenders be called for lowering and. cutting, as per overseer's report, on Wilson's line ; tenders to be in by next meeting. It was resolved, That the following alterations be made in the rate roll : — From name of the late G. Phillips to B. Dafter for section 124, Sanson ; from James Bisk to A. Thomson, block 44, Waitohi; from B. M. Murray to Wm. Richardson, block A Waifcohi ; from J. Risk to H. Hinks, section 19, Sanson ; from W. Bichardson to Palowski, for section 117, block 18, Oroua ; from B. Gray to F. H. Tompkins, section 7. Bongotea.

That the tender of Martin Boyle for forming and claying, the Beach road air 18a 9d per chain be accepted, .subject to the Department passing the necessary documents and plans. Mr Boyle to commence work within three days of receiving notice to do bo. —Advocate. .
