THE TOWN CLERK.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE MANAWATU HBBALD. Sir, — As a ratepayer permit me to make a few observations on the proposal of the Borough Council to amalgamate the offices of town cleric, inspector of works and nuisances, librarian and assessor. As a matter of fact, and quite properly, the late town clerk declined to undertake some
of these duties as they were not appropriate to his office, and others will have the same objections. It would be as reasonable to include the lighting and ranging also. There are certainly several competent men now residing in the Borough able and willing to undertake the duties if they were divided, and this with advantage to the ratepayers, not only inefficiency but with economy, as the council are offering a larger salary in the aggregate to one man than they are now paying to several. If the duties are not now performed satisfactorily the works committee have power to make the necessary alterations, and If there are ratepayers willing and competent rhey should have preference over strangers. Trusting the council will reconsider Jheir proposal, I am, &c. J. A. Pbrreau.
