GENERAL MEETING.

Present — The Mayor, Crs Westwood, Fraser, Rhodes and Hennessy. The minutes were read and confirmed. The Mayor said it was the duty of the Council to put on record the sad end of the late Town Clerk which they must all regret as everyone did. He proposed that this Council place on record its regret at the death of the late Town Clerk, Mr T. F. Gibson, and convey to the widow and family the heartfelt sympathy of the Council in the family's sad and irreparable bereavement. Cr Hennessy seconded the resolu* tion. The question was carried unanimously. . • Correspondence was read and considered and the following resolutions agreed to : — Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Westwood, That a. special meeting be held on the 6th o^May, 1898, at 7.30 p.m. to confirm, resolution passed in April, 1898. s Proposed by Cr Fraser, seconded by Cr Rhodes, That this Council endorses the permission granted by the Reserves Committee to Cycling Club, to hold Sports in Victoria Park on the 17th March, 1898. Proposed by Cr Fraser, seconded by Cr Westwood, That . this Council obtain from Mr Martin, solicitor to the Municipal Association, an opinion as to the position with regard to the Valuation Roll owing to the death of the valuer, Mr T. F. Gibson. Proposed by Cr Westwood, seconded by Cr Rhodes, That the totara timber for decking the Awahou bridge be procured at once from Messrs Gammon & Co. at 18s 4d per 100 ft delivered. Proposed by Cr Westwood, seconded by Cr Hennessy, That the name of Ellen Honor 6 on rate book for sections 2, 3, 4 be altered to that of George Nye, also that the name of Harry Procter be placed on rate-book for part section No. 88 Lot 33 in place of William Morpeth. The Public Works Report, Library Report and Inspector of Nuisances Report were read and it was resolved on the motion of Cr Westwood, seconded by Cr Rhodes, That the reports of the following committees be adopted : — Public Works, Library and Inspector of Nuisances. Tenders were opened for the Pound. Only 3 tenders for erection of the Pound were received and only 2 tenders for renting the same. For erecting the pound, J. Hillary at £18, E. A. Coley £10 5s and G. Webley £7 ss. For renting pound, J. Hillary £15 and McGibney £10. Proposed by Cr Fraser, seconded by Cr Rhodes, That the tender of Mr Webley for erection ot the Public Pound on the Ferry Reserve for the sum of £y 5s be accepted, and that the Reserves Committee be appointed to pass the work. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Hennessy, seconded by Cr Rhodes, That the tender of J. Hillary for lease of the Ferry house and pound tor the term of 3 or 5 years be accepted at the rate of £15 per annum. Lease to commence on the erection ot pound. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Hennessy, seconded by Cr Westwood, That Charitable Aid be granted to L. Halcrow. — Carried. The Mayor said he had heard it mentioned that as he was about leaving the town people had said he ought not to be Mayor. He desired to do as the Council wished. Cr Fraser said that he thought the Mayor was undoubtedly legally in possession of the chair and he recognised that he had devoted much attention to the bridge and he would like to see him retain office. Cr Rhodes hoped to see the Mayor still keep office and that he would attend some of the meetings. The Mayor said he would always attend to his Borough duties wherever he might live. Cr Westwood was glad to hear that even if the Mayor lived away that he would attend to his duties and he thought they should feel obliged to him for keeping to his post. The Mayor thanked the Councillors for the expression ot their confidence. The Council then went into committee to consider the calling for applications for Town Clerk. On Council resuming it was Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Hennessy, That applications be invited by advertisement for the position of Town Clerk to the Borough, to be in by 6 p.m. of April 14, 1898, and that a special meeting be held at 7.30 p.m. on that day for that purpose. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Westwood, seconded by Cr Rhodes, That alternative applications be invited for the following :— 1. Town Clerk at £75 per annum; 2. Town Clerk, Librarian, Inspector of Nuisances, house rent, fire and lighting at £100 per annum, and that the Mayor, Cr Hennessy and the mover be a committee to arrange the specifications. — Carried. The Council then adjourned.
