An Egyptian patrol cam* in oon* - tact with a body of Dervish horsemen 11 miles up the river from Atbara. The Dervishes attacked the Egyptians but were repulsed with heavy loss. The Egyptian artillery shelled the enemy with great effect. Seven Egyptians were killed. Five hundred Dervish horsemen attacked a party of Egyptian cavalry who were returning from patrol duty. The enemy rode up almost to the Atbara camp. The Dervish .camp fires aret visible about 18 miles distant from Atbara.
The Dervish force under Mahmnd comprises 2000 cavalry and 8000 riflemen, with seven cannon, The remainder of the enemy consist of swordmen and spearmen. BrigadierGeneral Lewis' brigade has advanced upon Abadar. The Dervish are concentrating upon Umdebia, In the attack made upon them by Dervish horsemen the Egyptian cavalry displayed 'steadiness and dash.
The Dervishes are adopting elusive tactics, and it is believed the main body is encamped in thick bush 80 miles from the Atbara river.
Deserters state that the Dervish General Mehmud in entrenched at El Herzi, short of food. Osman Digaa is nearer Adarema.
