The Wirokino Bridge.
Yesterday the Mayor added one more white Btone to the heap be has been piling up in commemoration of his acts and deeds towards advancing the interests of this Borough. There left Foxton aa a deputation to the Manawatu County Council a very representative body of men, of whom, it can fairly be said, there would have been none, had not the Mayor, in season and out of season, stuck to his proposition of a bridge over the Manawatu river. All these attempts to secure an advantage resemble the old fashioned plan of making a snow ball. The proposer must have thought the matter out for himself, be must then have secured the support of a few, and then in turn all these working, persuasion is brought on those who hold the strings of the money bags. The Mayor convinced himself that the project was • feasible, he then convinced the Borough Council and : they in turn have convinced the H^rowhenua County Counoii of the benefits that a bridge would be, and it is pleasing to note that they in turn have joined forces with the Mayor and travelled to Sandon to ioterviaw the Manawatu County Council. The result of yesterday's work should be satisfactory, but wo muoh regretted to hear the Chair man say that the reply of the Council would be hung up for another month owing to the few membprs of the Council then present. However it is pleasing to see representatives of a large tract of country working pleasantly together to secure a public work.
The reason for Mr Allan Strong's early departure from the Counoii yesterday was the neocessiiy for him to be in Wellington that night and he left so as to catoh the 630 train at Shannon. The deputation had looked to him for an introduction. A large number of truoks of lambs came down by the train last night. They are for shipment to Titirangi by the next Anchor Company's steamer. A letter from our Rongotea correspondent will appear in our next issue. The teniiia match against Otaki has : been postponed until Saturday, 19th inst., through some of the players from Otaki being unable to gt away on the day originally chosen. The viaitora will be enter- • tamed at a social on the evening preceding < the match at the If aioaio Hall. i
Mr Rhodes sent away yesterday a large quantity of quinces which he advertised fos sale. He has still a good supply, which no donbt will find a ready sale. A pleasing instance of neighbourly kindness was shown yesterday when Mr T. Bowe was removing his household effects to hia new residence. All hia neighbours tamed out with carts and traps and took a load for him. The " Weka." the new engine purohased from the- Manawatu Railway Company is neat and powerful, but tfe unde. stand that she is not definitely retained owing to some misunderstanding as to what was, and what was not, purchased with her. When this is settled the " Fox " will go under repair. We noticed one or two paddocks in turnips and though fairly good yet the want of rain was plainly shown. Other paddocks of thin root were very poor indeed. There were not many potatoes to be seen along the line, and what there were do not promise big yields. Fires are not all finished yet as we learnt that a fire had just broken out near Sandon in McKenzie's bush and should it get ahead the cbanc.es of the township being burnt were seriously discussed, there being no water near. Some enthusiasts in the matter of the forthcoming sports have guaranteed the money for a special train ou St. Patrick's Day. Rumours about the purchase of a me r steamer have been rife . for the paat few days, but we have the beat authority for saying (hat at present nothing definite has boon settled. A large quantity of timber is on the ground, at the back of All Saints' Church, for the ere c; ion of a Sunday school The frosts we had three days running has nc'fd very curiously, cutting some p tatoeß badly, not all over but in patches, and not touching others close bye. Pumpkins iv this neighbourhood will be very scarce. There seems something wrong in the advertisement of an estate not far from town, that is for sale, as the purchaser has to take all the stock at a valuation although 1500 acres on which they aro now running is not inolud din the area. The purchaser will thus slart haudienpped by an excess of stock or will have to lake the risk of a sale at lower prices. The question of (he Beach Road was mentioned by the Mayor at the Manawatu County Council yesterday after the deputation had left and discovered that nothing had been heard by that body. The plan was signed by the Messrs lltibiasons 1 oariy in February. This piece of work is fast getting its name up for most extraordinary delays. Mr Bowe's new house has been finished by the builder, Mr Andrew Jonson, and he has given every satisfaction to the owner. MrJ. G Wilson was unable to attend the meeting of the Manawatu County Council yesterday owing to having received a kick from a horse. The country along the Tram line through Carnarvon and Sandon is very muoh burnt up, more than we are here, which is saying a good deal. All the corn crops are cut and stacked and farmers are busy plough* ing the stubble for turnips. On St Patrick's Day the Sandon Tram will leave Carnarvon for the races after the arrival of the train leaving Foxton at 9. am. and will return in time to catch (he down train. Th 9 return fares are made very low being only three shillings and sixpence. Certainly the most effective medicine in the world ib Sanders and Son's Eucalypti Extract.
