Foxton Borough Council.
The usual monthly meeting of the above was held last night at 7.30 at the Library Buildings. Present— His Worship the Mayor (Cr. J. R. Stansell), and Crs. P. Hen- a nessy, T. Westwood, H. Coley, <ttk J^J Rhodes, J. W. Walsh and A. Fraser^^ The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Itiward Correspondence was read as follows : — From the Librarian (W. J. Brown), applying for an increase of salary of £10 per year. From Mary Jane Newth and T. Nye, re transfers to be made in rate book. From C. T. Austin, requesting the Council to have the drain on the western side of Stewart-street cleaned out A before the wet weather sets in. From Geo. Gray, J. Symons, C. H. Symons, P. Neylon and C. T. Austin, petitioning the Council to have the outlet drain on west side ot Stewartstreet, starting near Adams' gate, also drain on east side of Stewart-street, and drain along the west side of Pat-rick-street, cleaned out, deepened, and widened where neceessary. From Col. Secretary's Office, saying 1 that the time for preparing the valuation list will be extended until the 22nd March, and for inspection until the 22nd April. From E.* S. Thynne, drawing atten* tion to the drifting sand from the road to his property. From the Bishop ot Wellington, conveying to the members of the Council his thanks and grateful appreciation tor allowing all ordained clergymen free passage over the Wirokino Ferry whose parochial duties extend over and into the Foxton Borough. From John Connell, applying for progress payment of on his contract on Main Drain. From Engineer's Department, Wan. ganui, saying the order for shingle would have been executed long ago, but the Traffic Department have been unable to supply wagons, and that the order would be completed as soon as possible. REPORT OF PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEEt Gentlemen,— We have to report that the day men have been employed in cleaning out the drain and repairing sides in Russell-street with willow cuttings, also shifting culvert in Jenks* street. They have also been preparing Nor-biton-road and Russell-street for spreading clay on, and in spreading metal on Moutoa-road and~apreading clay on Harbour-street. The Committee would recommend the Council to order 1000 tons of metal from the Railway Department for repairs to roads, and to metal the Har-bour-street Road, and that tenders be called for carting same at per ton. Also that tenders be called for 150 yards metal from Mr Nye's pit for repairing the Wirokino Road when required. We would advise the decking of bridge in Main-street to within 6 feet of either side, which will require 2,500 feet of totara, 12x2. We also recommend that tenders be called for painting the Council's buil^P ings with two coats of genuine white lead and oil of approved colours, and also the lamp posts in the Borough. J. R. PUBLIC RESERVES COMMITTEE REPORT, Gentlemen,— We. recommend that the public pound be removed to Ferry Reserve site, and that application bo called for leasing same, together with house and land attached. J. R. Stansell, Chairman. P. Hennessy. T. Westwood. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Hennessy, That the following transfers be granted : Section 283 from Thos. Nye to Geo. Adams as occupier ; and Sections 141 to 147 and Sections 150, 151, and part 152 and 153 from the name of the late Tom Newth to Mary Jane Newth as owner and occupier. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Coley, That the application of the librarian re increased salary be referred to Library Committee to report at next meeting of the Council. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Coley, That tenders be called for cleaning drain on western side of Stewart-street leading to river, and also drain on west side of road in front of Mr J. Symons' from Mrs Austin's to corner of road opposite Mr Charles Symons', provided owners of property erect bridges over said drain. Carried. Proposed by Cr Walsh, seconded by Cr Rhodes, That the report of the Reserves Committee be adopted, and that tenders be called for the removal of the pound, and lease of new pound and house, tenders to be in by next general meeting. Carried. Proposed by Cr Fraser, seconded by Cr Walsh, That the report of the Public Works Committee x be adopted, and that their recommendations be given effect to. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Hennessy, That tenders be called for carting and delivering 150 yards of metal from Mr Nye's pit to where required on Wirokino Road, also painting outside chambers with two coats genuine white lead and oil of approved tints and painting lamp posts. Only on« tender was received for leasing the Wirokino Ferry for one year, that oi John Hillary, and the Mayor proposed, am Cr Goley seconded, That the tender of J Hillary be accepted for leasing Wirokinc Ferry for twelve months from April Ist 1898. Cr Fraser proposed as an amendment and Cr Walsh seconded, That fresh tender! be called for leasing the Wirokino Ferry, tc close in a fortnight, and a special meeting be called to consider the same, the lease tc bo granted by stamped agreement to bi signed by His Worship the Mayor and on< Councillor, and the successful tenderer. On a vote being taken the amendment was carried, five voting f<jr it, and two foi the motion. Five tenders were received for carting clay, two tenderers putting in the same amount, and Cr Weitwood proposed, se conded by Cr Coley, That the tender oi Arthur Eeeve for carting clay be accepted at Is 9d per yard, Cr Rhodes proposed as an arnendn^nt, and Cr Fra3er seconded, That a ballot be taken as to whether Messrs Stewart oi Beeves' tender be accepted for clay contract. On being put to the meeting the motion was carried. Proposed by Cr Weslwood, seconded by Cr Coley, That the clerk be instructed to sue for all rates not paid by the 31st March. Carried. Proposed by Cr Westwood, seconded by Cr Hennessy, That this Council engage the Sandon tram for the purpose of conveying the special deputation to the Manawatu County Council meeting on Wednesday, the 9th instant, and that the press reporters be invited to join the deputation. Carried. The Council considered some correspondence re the Wirokino Bridge and Beach Road, after which the meeting adjourned.
