FALSE PRETENCES

John Day Jone?, a nodical practitioner, residing at Foxton, was J charged that ■in (ho month of Ftbiuary, at Wellington, he obtained by means of throe valueless cheques the sum of £6 la 6d from William Crother Fi zGerakl, chemist, with intent to defraud. Dr Findlay appeared to prosecute, and Mr Jellicoa defended. The informant, in the of evidence, raid he had not consuited the defendant professionally. He asked him on one occasion in Ftbiuary if he bad had any colliery experience. The defendant paid, "Yea; a large amount." Wiu ness said, " Would you mind telling Mr Jeliicoe what colour you find a scar after a man has fallen down a coa!-pii ?" On the 17th February the defendant was engaged in a lawyer's nffice for 20 minutes for witness. Witness had looked on the defendant &a a possible expert witness in a case that was pending. The defendant was found guilty of o'ltainiflg £8 on the 17th February by f ilfP pretences H>' wns fimd £5, and ordered to pny £3 and £1 Is costs ; to be paid in three instal-

ments on the 3rd April, the 3rd May and the Brd June ; in default of payment of either instalment the whole amount to become due, and the defendant to become liable to twe months' hard labour.— N.Z.Times.
