The extent; of the fires may be
gauged from the fact that they swept over the hill from Pakaratahi and eventually threatened Cross' Greek and although the visitation there was not so strong and fierce as at he Summit, it was sufficiently aggressivo to necessitate a strong detachm&nt of the railway men Wfg kept on d«ty all night in caWof cmergeuciep. The conflagration was primarily due to fires being lighted in the fallen bush in the Paikakariki valley.
