Mr Chamberlain, Secretary of State for the Colonies, states that Colonel Pilcher, who 13 in command of the British force at Lokoja, has confirmed the report that six French officers and 200 men have arrived at Argungu Taga, in the Sultanate of Sokoto. In view of the negotiations for the settlement of the Anglo-French territorial disputes, Mr Chamberlain is unable to believe that the invasion of Sokoto was authorised, since the French Government had recognised the rights of Britain in regard to the Sultanate. It is semi officially denied in Paris that French forces are present in the Sultanate of Sokoto. The Journal des Debats says Sokoto is indisputably British territory. respite the gravity of the situation the Paris Bourse is steady. In England Consols fell only the one-eighth already reported.
