» A recent issue of the Family Church man coutains the following interesting reference to Wilson Barrett, author of "The Sign of the Cross": -Mr Wilson Barrett, the well-known actor, in a speech last Friday week at the Grand Theatre, Leeds, recalled an interesting incident in which the present Bishop of Truro is intimately concerned. " Sixteen years ago," Mr Barrett said, "I stood on this stage, and made a speech at the opening of this theatre. I said I was entering upon a great task—a task that might end in disaster to myself—but that I trusted the Yorkshire people, and particular the people of Leeds, to help me to make the threatre not only a place of amusement, but aplaoe of instruction as well. ' I stated that it was my earnest wish to do gome good. A few day3 afterwards the clergj of Lseda sent for me, and their spokesman was the Rev. Dr Gofct. He said, "Mr Barrett, the clergy have road your speech in the morning papers. You say(and we believe you meant it) that you wank to do good—that you want to give the Leed3 people something that will elevate their tastes and make them better men and women. Is that your intention? Will you give us that promise?' I replied, 'Gentlemen, as far as lies in my power I will do so.' I gave the promise. Now for the sequel. Only a few months ago I received the most exquisite Worcester vase, round which were these words :- 'From - the Bishop of Truro to Wilson Barrett m grateful acknowledgment of a promise nobly kept/
