Klondyke.

The- well known pugilifb Frank . Slavin, who it wai recently reported had died on hia way to Klondyke, is still very much alive, ai may be judged from the following extract from a latter to hii wife ;—" There is plenty of gold in the creek where my claim is. I oan sink a shaft on it next week and try the value of it. It is hard to dig a hole here, as the ground is frozen, and you have to make fires in the holes to thaw the ice. There are tons of gold here bat the difficulty is the hardship and the ioe to contend with. Provisions ara almost impossible to be had here. Everything is terribly dear. Drinks and cigars are 2/1 each, champagne £4 per bottle, and it is not as good as the cider we get from Norfolk. We have no coin or notes here - it is all gold. Each man has a gold sack k and they weigh in and oat ; gold is as plentiful here as pennies are in London. The last boat that left here about three weeks ago took eleven torn of gold, and there are fifteen tons to go on the river boat that goes next week. There can be no exaggeration : it is the richest field that has evor been known, but the difficulty is provisioning and r getting the gold into camp. There are men who were working in saloons a few weeks ago and who are now millionaire?, and with a little luck any man may become the game. They have taken a million out of a ten foot square ; it is impossible to Credit the wealth of the y fieWi."
