A French gunboat bas passed tbe rapids on the Upper Mekong river, and found the • iver easily navigable to Kiang-Kwang, in Tonkin territory. The Motueka correspondent of the Nelson Cohnist writes on the harvest operations that the corn crops on the whole (with the exception of those on the dry plain land) have been fairly good, especially the wheat crops, and there have also been some very good crops of oats and barley, and should the yield turn out as good as appearance there should be little to complain of as far as tbe grain is concerned.
