The Wellington Torpedo Boat.
— . • The torpedo boat is not cruising at the Heads in view of the possible crisis in the East, it is not even engaged in towing targets— it is rusting and rotting on the beach at Mahanga Bay. Visitors who went across to tbe Naval camp at the bay yesterday amused themselves by poking their fingers through the blistered steel plates of tbe deck and sides, which crumbltd away like paper to tbe touch. There the boat j lies, on a rough cradle, exposed to j all weathers and the seas, huge gaps j in her plates through which tbe sun- i light dances, and through which curious people gaze at the still intact ' machinery, and reflect with some j reason thafc the lot of the taxpayer ci these blest isles is hard, very hard. | It might be interesting to know of the oondition of the torpedo?, and to have an official denial of the rumour tbat they have not been inspected for years and tbat their condition is suoh that the men cannot be persuaded, to handle them.
