4* Reports from Calcutta state that the solar eclipse of the 21st insfc.— for the observation of which laborate arragement had been made there by British and Amerioan astronomers, owing to the oentral Une of totality
MI-MW_______«___MM_|M_______l passing over India—was witnessed under favourable conditions. Seven good pictures of the eclipse were obtained at Dumraon, in the Bengal Presidency; and at bazar, another observing station near Benares. The totality occupied 00 second. The appearance of the corona wa\ JP similar to that witnessed during the solar eclipse in 1896. The eclipse of the sun obscured Bombay. The totality lasted two minutes. The eclipse was a superb spectacle, the corona showing a pale silver blue. One ray was computed to be 2,000,000 miles in length. ByL-. means of a spectrum an analysis of C/ iron was detected in the corona. Numerous fine photographs "were taken. The natives were greatly excited owing to the astronomers' prediction' of disaster.
