What About the Acclimitisation Society ?
WANTON DESTBUCTION TO NATIVE GAME. ■ . ii i The officer of the Acclimatisation Society has been obnoxiously active here and unnecessarily arbitrary in his directions; but it appears » hit in some parts of hi 3 domains he is as gentle as a sucking d^ve. The N.Z. Times of Tuesday hai tha following paragraph, which, if true, shows the Society up in a startling manner : " Some aotion should be taken by the authorities in regard to the wanton destruction of native game soing on in the Upper Hutt district lately. On Sunday those in the neighbour hood of Wallaceville heard a good deal of shooting going on and it is believed that exeemive bags of wild duck and pigeon were scoured. At this time of the year most of the nativt tirda are bo tame that they could be almost knocked over with a stick, and, apart from the illegality of the proceedings,' it is absolute cruelty to kill game when they are busy rearing their youug. If (ha offenders who have been .breaking game laws With such impunity can be brought to book it is to be hoped they will be punished so severely as to provide an effectual warning to ! others. ' .-
