Fires.
* WAIRARAPA AND FORTY MILE BUSH IN A BLAZE. The most disastrous bush fires have occurred in the Forty Mile bush and the Wairarapa. The Pahiatua railway station was saved with difficulty, and a report says that fifteen houses and the Wealeyau church have been burnt. The Makuri Gorge is on fire and the road blocked by the flames. Residences at Ballance have been burnt. At Mangatainoka the Wesleyan church and other buildings have been burnt. Similar damage has been done at Scarborough. • The whole country around YYoodville is on fire. One settler at Mangahao had hiß house burnt down and put his family ia the well for the night. Fires in the TawStaia district and between Eketahuna and Alfredtown have done much damage. At Parkville soms houaci have been burnt. Fires itf Blenheim, in the Sounds district are still raging. The rain last night appears to have been insufficient to' check the course of the- flames, and the gale now blowing will help to. carry destruction still further.
