Excessive Employment of Children.
LABOUR DEPARTMENT TO 'J, BE NOTIFIED. At Dunedin on Thursday evening last the question of the excessive employment of children of echool age was disoussed by the Educational Institute in committee. From statements made it appeared that in some cases in the colony children at- ' tending school where requested to do several hours' hard work, and physically unfit for their sohcol duties, and even in some instances- - injuriously affected their physical development. There waa no objection to a reasonable atnounio^ work. It was decided that Mr Law, of Wanganni, be requested topljtcQ a synopsis of the statement of the extent to which the labour of children of school age is employed at tht disposal of the executive, with a view to its being brought under the notice of the Premier, as head of the. Labour Department, and also under the notice of the branch institutes, for the purpose of oon- - sidering the best way of potting a stop to such alleged abuae of child labour. f i
