The question of taking steps to secure the arrest of Dr Orpen in connection with the death of Susan McCallum has been under consideration of the Minister of Justice, the Hon. TfThompson, who ha? consulted with the Premier and Police Commissioner Tunbridge on the subject, with the result that an application for bia extradition will be made through the Imperial Government to ths United States, in case he should arrive in San Francisco by the Alameda. Although the coroner's jury returned a verdict of manslaughter only, a warrant for jnurder has been issued, the offence with which Dr Orpan is accused coming it is contended, within the 4e nn^i° n °* fcna ' cr ' me in the Criminal Code Act. It is understood a question was raised by the Commissioner as to whether there was any probability of a charge of mavder being sustained even if Dr Orpen'a extradition were obtained. It was also pointed out that when the, New South Wales Government extradited Butler the cost was £8000. The Premier and Minister of Justice, however, were of opinion that no question of cost should interfere in administration of justice, and tha* the extradition should be applied for in tne ordinary way.
