A Gigantic Slab of Wood.
The aection of a Californian ned* I ! wood tree, with which Mr W. W. j Astor wiof his wager, has to*a ||
safely brought to Cliveden, says the Daily Nem. The wager was the result of some statements made by Mr Astor at a dinner party concern ing" the size of the Californian redfroods, the owner of Cliveden staking a considerable sum on his ability to prodnce a oross-section of one of the tree capable of accommodating forty guest when used as a dinner table. The section shipped from San Francisco is two feet in thickness, with an average diameter of 15ft 6in, and a maximum diameter of 16ft Gin. Considerable difficulty was experienced in bringing the slab of timber by road from London to Cliveden, sixteen horses being employed to draw the trolly on which it was placed. At Cliveden it was taken down the grass drive, and owing to the splintering of the planks beneath the wheels the latter frequently sank deep into the turf. A staff of men are now getting the slab into position.
