Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JAN. 4, 1898. Shipping and Farmers.

_ 4 It may not often come under the notice of the tillers of the soil, or as a matter of fact, of graziers, the very great help out ehippicg is in creating a consumption of what we grow. In connection with the articles that we have written urging our settlers to give more attention to the rearing of poultry, we desired to find out how the consumption of these items on the Home Liners would assist, and we have received some \ery interesting particulars from the Manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, for which we are obliged. The figures we give relate only to their passenger steamers, and to get an idea of the idea of the whole consumption there would be their cargo boats, as well as the steamers of the other steamship lines to be taken into consideration. The consumption of colonial grown produce by the steamers we have mentioned will help to emphasise the value we place upon our shipping from the view we have before stated, as a consuming one. In the rear the N.Z. Shipping Company require the trifle of sixty thousand eggs from the colonists to keep their passengers happy ; other Items in poultry are 8000 fowls, 1200 ducks, 800 geese and 240 turkeys, and in dainty dishes, 1200 dozen of oysters, 800 dozen of sheens' tongues, 1200 crayfish, 600 rabbits and 200 hares are indented. In meat over lOO.OOOIbs of fresh beef, and nearly the same quantity of fresh mutton and 60001 bs of lamb are purchased, besides 60001bs of corned beef and 16001bs of corned pork. We find that 240 calve? heads and the same numb*" -; f are wanted as well as .--- V% ; >->.«/ -. of veal. Only some 8' */f "**■- % \ 900 ox-chfch;., cOOO sh. -.'*'. ; .

600 sweetbreads, 1200Iba of tripe and 800 dnzon of cheeps' tongues are also on the list. The grazier and poultrier should be satisft -d that it is wrfll with lUcJH, h»t the dairy mdustry /y^ t 0 the front w j lv J^vAMb3 of batter and 90 tons of potatoc?. Daring the twelve monlhs the Company also purchase close on 15,000;b3 of fish. These figures tall their ovva tale and" are very interesting. We are not giving a copy of the Indent List of each steamer but we might add that 60 ton 3of flour are required besides a ton of biscuits. Fruit and vegetables depend necessarily on tha season, but in .these there does not n,ppear a very large consumption. About 24,000 pints of ale, 10,000 pints of stout, besides spirits are purchased, and 7000 bottles of soda water and 8000 bottles of gingerade are needed to suit the palates of all parties.
