Gale in the Gorge.
» The nor'wesfc gale blowing hero yesterday (Thursday) was felt very severely in the Manawatu Gorge, and a party of visitors to the district who went there on a picnicing expedition received practical illustration of its force. On arrival there the severity of the wind through the narrow cuttings prevented anything like pleasure and a start was made for Woodville. Nearing the Wood* villa side of the Gorge the wind took complete charge of a buggy load of passengers, shifting the vehicle bodily from a safe position on the road to within a few inches of the precipitous banks. Needless to state after this experience all haste was made for Woodville, from whence the ladies of the party returned to town by train, the vehicles returning in the evening after the gale had abated; The tourists are now fully convinced that on a boisterous day the Manawatu Gorge, with alt its picturesque scenery, is not an ideal resort. — Standard.
