Moutoa Notes.

(fbom our own correspondent.)

At 2.80 this (Wednesday) morning we were rudely awakened to the fact that our hold upon this earth is somewhat shakey. One little girl called out to her mother to know if the world was ending. So far I have not "heard of any damage ; a few bottles were shaken off the shelves in the Post Office store.

Possibly the weather may settle down now we have had a gpod shake up. The last few days have been very fine. The crops are not looking very grand this year, the heavy rains and winds have told against them, and now the sun is asserting its power by baking the surface with a hard crust, which will require a lot of tickling with the hoe to make it smile a harvest.

Some of the men engaged flax clearing on the Motoa Estate have finished their contracts, while others are a long way behind. . Notwithstanding the cry of no work men could not be found with grit enough to stick to it, Boxna of them even forgetting to say good bye to the grocpr and butcher. Mrs J. A. Smith, who has been ill for some time, is, we are pleased to say, able to get about again. Mr Edwards starts next week. .

The mosquitoes, which have been conspicuous by their absence, so far, oame last nighHn great swarms.

Some of the settlers have green peas, new potatoss, and strawberries, which is, f think, highly creditable to them considering the backward season.
