Spelling.
A spelling bee would bo a useful pastime, and it would not be before it was wanted*. Dictionaries differ, therefore a thoroughly up'tooate one should first be fixed Upon. We hltve had . our attention drawn to two oi 1 tHree frorlfo which have puzzlda many. First there was our reference to our local taxidermist, readers pronounced it as " tax'idder mist," but the Century dictionary ciebkres tlje rigtit pronunciation to be " tax'srdrrmist." Tho'n we were asked about the word pumice, some declaring it right to say pumis, others punvis, and we again sought the advice of the Century. This dictionary favours the latter, pro* nunciatidn, Mt states tlie fonder is also correct. We find spelling is different even locally, as the ordinary way of spell* ing Saturday gets a twist when spelt by printers elsewhere, as there are some dodgers lying abotit the tdwn here which gives the spe'ling for the last day of til© week as SaturdUy.
