Phylloxera in Masterton.

The Wairarapa Daily Hmn has the following :- On Saturday last Mr Adolf Schulz, who baa been appointed by the Government to inspect vines in the Wairarapa, arrived in Masterton, and has since visited the vineyards and grapehouses of several residents. Although tho matter is not yet officially made known, we regret to state we are in a position to say that Mr Schulz considers he has discovered the viticulturist'a great enemy — phylloxera—in more than one vinery. The matter is a serious one, as grape growing had just been taken up with interest by several Masterton people. Mr T. W. Kirk, Government Biologist, is in Ma3terton to-day to consult with Mr Schulz. and the matter will be officially announced probably within the naxt few days. In certain instances Mr Schulz visited gardens, and explaining that he was a Govern* ment official, dug up vines aud fully exercised the inspectorial privileges with which he ia invested. It is stated that the destruction oi a number of vines inuet follow. It is under" stood the disease has existed in some vines examined for years past. If this is so it i 3 probable that it exists in other parts ot the Wairarapa.
