District Judge Kettle was in Wellington on Wednesday. Either these charges must be substantiated, or they mnst be with•lrawu, and with this object in view his Honour put himself into communication with the Justice Department immediately on hearing that he was accused of being " a tool of the Bank of New South Wales," to asoertain what steps his official chief intended to take in the matter, whether he propose to hold investigation into the truth or otherwise of the allegations, or whether he was content to let one of the Judges of the colony remain under the imputation that he was allowing his financial position to unfairly influence his judicial precisions. So far the Department has vouchsafed no reply to these enquiries, and the same authority states that the Judge has come to Wellington for the purpose of obtaining justice at the hands of the Government, or, failing this, to claim his right to go to the Bar of the House and demand a vindication of his character from Parliament itself. .
