Manawatu County Council.

CR. RANSOM RESIGNS. CR. TAYLOR ELECTED CHAIRMAN. The annual meeting of the above Council was held on Wednesday, 1 the following being present :— Crs J . Taylor, Hammond, McLennan and ! Strang. i The Clerk having taken the chair, asked the Council to elect a chair* ; man for the ensuing year. He also ; read a letter from Mr V. C. Ransom [as follows : — " Through ciroum- ■ stances in my business arrangements I having arisen which prevent me ■ giving the attention that the position \ of Councillor for the Biding that I represent, I therefore scud you my i resignation as Councillor for the I Campbell Biding. At the same i time I wish to heartily thank you all ; for the kindness and oourtesy always \ shown me during the nine years that ■ I have met with you at the Council » table." After considerable regret had been ' expressed by tha whole of the mem- \ bers present at the late Chairman's ' decision, and a hope expressed that I he would reconsider the matter and again offer himself for re-election, it ' was ultimately carried on the pro--1 posal of Cr Hammond, seconded by k Cr Masters, That Cr Taylor be ■ elected Chairman for the ensuing year. [ Proposed by Cr Masters, seconded by Cr McLennan, That Crs Taylor and Hammond be elected to represent i the Manawatu County Council on the Palmerston North District Hos--1 pital and Charitable Aid Board.— Carried. ; ORDINARY MEETING. On the newly elected Chairman \ taking his seat the following corres- \ pondence was read and dealt with : — From tht Audit Office re returning County balance-sheet for half year ended 20th September, 1897, and 31st March, same year, certified as being correct, also asking for printed copy of same. From Palmerston North Hospital and Charitable Aid Board informing the Council that it is entitled to return two members, .and that the election must be held on the 21th inst., also requesting that the names of the elested members be forwarded. Proposed by Or Strang, seconded by Cr Taylor, That it is with the deepest regret that this Council receives the resignation of Cr Ransom, and they wish to place on record their appreciation of the valuable services rendered by Cr Ransom in all matters connected with the welfare of the Council.— Carried. Proposed by Cr McLennan, That C. A. Weightman's name be placed on the rate book for section 158, Sanson in place of G. L. L. Haddow. —Carried. Proposed by Cr McLennan, se--1 conded by Cr Masters, That F. L. Behrent's ascount for trimming and claying River Bank road be passed

for payment subject to the Engineer's report beitig satisfactory,— Carried. Proposed by Cr Masters, seconded by Gr Strang, That a Committee be appointed (d pass accounts and accept tenders on December Bth, Committee to consist of the Chairman, Crs Hammond and Masters.— Carried. Proposed by Cr Masters, seconded by Cr McLennan; That Crs Taylor" and! ll&mmond sign the deed between the Counsil and P. E. Daniell, in connection with Scott's Ferry. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Taylor, seconded by Cr McLennan, That the Council offices be closed from 22nd of December until 4th January, 1898. — Carried. Proposed by Cr McLennan, That Cr Taylor be appointed to sign cheques in place of Cr Ransom, resigned. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Strang, seconded by Cr Masters. That the balancesheet be adopted, and the Chairman sign the same, and that the Clerk have 50 copies printed for distribation* Proposed by Or Masters, seconded by Cr Hammond, That tenders be called for metalling about 100 chaini on Richardson's Line, tenders to be in by noon of December Bth. — Carried. The proposal of Cr Strang, mconded by Cr McLennan, That in future the overseer be instructed to take notice of his time when working in various ridings, and that his time be charged direct to the riding in which his time was occupied and that the general working expenses account now in foroe be abolished — was lost by 8 to 2. The Council then adjourned to January 12th 1898.— Advocate.
