Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, NOV. 27, 1897. The County Chairman.

[n the report of the Manawatu Oounty Council appears the notice ' >f Mr Ransom's resignation as a • 3onncillor, and thus as Chairman. It , 8 not surprising to read that the :ouncillors received this information ; with regret, as daring the years Mr ( V. C. Ransom has been Chairman i le has always secured the goodwill )f the members by his uniform cour- ■ :esy and attention to the business of ' he Council. Mr Ransom can look j jack on the years he has filled the i lonourable position of Chairman I vith pride, as a very large amount i

1 work has been carred out. Darng bis term of office a bridge ias been erected over the Oroua iver at Rongoteai the bridge at Lwahuri has been lengthened; the nain road from Foxton to Sanson las been metalled, there being but a ittle piece under contract, which is lot finished ; and the Tratn has been cepfc running. The finances are also n a satisfactory state. There is no loubt but that the office of chairman rf any large looal body is not a bed rf roses, and anyone who attends to the duty properly lias jalenly of work to do, and during late years we do not think tha honorarium allowed bas been equal to the labour. Mr Ransom has also had, what is always ci troublesome task for a chairman, a change in the office of clerk, tt is pleasant to read that the kind remarks of the councillors were forestalled by the chairman, as in his letter of resignation he heartily thanks them for the kindness and courtesy always shown him during the nine years that he has met them. So may it always be. We trust that some day Mr Ransom's services for the ratepayers may again be available. In the new cha ; rman, Mr Taylor, the Council secures an able and energetic man who should be able to take up the running, and he goes into office with a clerk who is most qualified for the position, and who has been sufficiently long in the office so as to have all the details at his fingers end. We congratulate Mr Taylor on the honour conferred upon him and do not doubt that he will justify the selection of hia fellow members.
