Wool Sales.
New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report as follows : — We held our first sale of the season on Friday, when we offered 880 bales out of a total catalogue offered by the combined brokers of about 1200 bales. The attendance of English buyers was not quit so large as last year, due, no doutW to the quantity of wool available being insufficient to attract their attention, but we are satisfied, that all following sales will be well attended as wje are assured of large catalogues. Local buyers, however, were in full force, and competition, was fairly active. As compared with the prioes obtaining at the opening sale of season 1896, held on 4th December, 1896, we have to record a distinct drop of $d per lb on the better qualities; nevertheless values were wall up to the equivalent of those ruling in London at last series. On the other hand low grrdes were well competed for, and realised price 3 equal to those of la3t year. The following is a range of tha prioes secured:— Superior greasy crossbred, 7f d to 7J; medium. 6£d to7d; inferior, 5d to 6£d; pieces, Bdto 4d; bellies, 8d to 4U; locks, Id to If d.
