Manamatu Herald THURSDAY, NOV. 4, 1897. A Hint to the Government.
There used to be .an. old saying in England that " they managed these things better in France/' never mind what the particular thing mentioned might be. We are reminded of this saying by reading a Cape paper in which it appears that in case of drifting sand on the coast Hue they manage matters better in South Afrida thab in Itfew Zealand. . The paper referred to has a Government advertisement notifying that a piece of Crown Land, in extent about 5,000 morgen, will* with a view to arresting the drift aands on the Cape Flafc^, be declared a " Demarcated Forest." We are unaware what further steps are then taken, but the fact is a suggestion of how much good tha Government could do on the coast line from Paikakariki to Wangunui. There will be found a large area of drifting sand which could profitably be turned into a forest, the seaward side With Mari tima pines, then with the wattle, and further inland with insignis. Planted thick aud properly thinned out these plantations Would begin to pay in seven or eight years, and in time be a source of wealth, besides being the means for the employment of labour, and the means of protect ing the property further inland. It should be seen to, but we cannot say we expect it will be.
