Fire at Mr Gardner's.

♦ We are sorry to learn that late on Saturday night the large room at Paiaka that has been used so many times for concerts, dancing, and for other purposes, was burned to the ground. The origin of the fire is a mystery, but it is thought that the wind blowing down the chimney carried some of the embers -on to the floor. There was also a bedroom and study in the building, the latter room containing the fireplace; Fortunately the building and furniture were insured, but some very valuable family paintings valued at £180, that money cannot replace, were destroyed. Nothing whatever could be done to save the building, as the wind was strong, the heat intense, and no water. The destruction of the building and paintings will be a great loss to . Mr Gardner and his family.
