Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, SEPT. 2, 1897. Borough Councillors.

T5 morrow nominations have to be made for Councillors for the Borough in the room of the three councillors who retire according to latfi As usual there 19 very litile interest taken in local politics, which is more the pity, though we are far from do siring any alteration in the personal of the retiring mambera, as they have done well during their term of office. It does not follow that though little is said about the election that a lot may not have been planned, and that is why the Burgesses who are content with the retiring members should sec that they are again nominated. Dining the present Mayor's term of office many improvements, both in our way 3, and in the energy shown to our advancement, have been made, speaking well both for the Mayor as well as the Councillors who are working with him, and as our chances of progress are not all anticipated, it would appear wise on the part of the ratepayers to keep in office a team that pulls well togeth"i\ There is a desire to see some repre- j aentative of that portion of the Borough outside the Main street, but no ratepayer seems sufficiently patriotic to take a share in the publio work. This is not as it should be, bun from the reasons we have already given we are not inclined to grumble j if the same Council remains. There is a great deal of work yet to be done j and everything points to its being | inevitable that the Mayor should be requested to seek re-eleotion at the end of this year's office, as the bridge, we may say, 13 in big hands", as he has initiated the agitation for one, and has the energy to make use of any opportunity that may be given him to forward it to success. It is again an instance that "it is not wise to swap horses when crossing a stream."
