1 1 i Perhaps the moat singular monui' meat is that erected by Mr Panlet | St. John to his horse. It crowns a I prominent bill in the neighbourhood

of Winchester,} caljed Farley Mouritj and is a landmark for many miles round. The monument is in the shape of a pyramid with four gabled door 3on each side, it is built of brick and plaster. On a cast-iron plate the following story is told, " XJrfderneath lies buried a horse the property of Panlet St. John, Esq., that in the month of September, 1788, leaped into a chalk pit twentyfive feet deep a fox-hunting, with his master on his back, and in October, 1774, he won the hunter's plate on Worthy Downs and was ridden by his own ;r and entered in the name of " Beware Chalk Pit." The above being the words of the original inscription, they were re* stored by the Rt. Hon. Sir William Heathoote, Baronet, Sept., A. D., 1870.
